Question. What information will people bring to their planning meetings with the NDIA?
Answer. FACS has developed a checklist of suggested documents to be included. The checklist can be used as a guide to ensure that a person’s support needs are captured. Checklists of suggested documents have been tailored for clients with specific and complex needs.
It has been recommended that the documents included should contain the most recent information about a person from the past 12 months. Documents that are 2-3 years old may also be included if essential to demonstrating how a person’s needs are changing.
Question. What does an NDIS plan look like?
Question. How does NDIS know who to contact, and when will NDIS contact us? And does my funding change over to NDIS on the 1st July 2016?
Answer. Information from Service Providers has been forwarded to ADHC regarding the names and contact details of clients registered with their organisation. This information will be used by the NDIA to contact currently funded participants over a period of time commencing from 1 July 2016. The NDIS is being rolled out from that date and participants will be progressively contacted to begin the process of developing their individual plan.
Funding that is currently being provided to participants will remain in place until an Individual Participant Plan has been developed and signed.
The NDIS is a big change and will be progressively rolled out across NSW. The NDIS will be operating state-wide by July 2018. As it is such a big change the NDIS is being introduced in stages, and it is important to get it right and make it sustainable. Existing service users and new participants will enter the scheme progressively.
In NSW, the NDIS will be rolled out by district. When the NDIS commences in a district, people currently receiving supports through New South Wales Government specialist disability services will be moving first.
From 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017 the NDIS will be rolled out in the following areas of NSW:
Central Coast; Hunter New England; Nepean Blue Mountains; Northern Sydney; South Western Sydney; Southern NSW; and Western Sydney.
Existing Commonwealth and state-based services and supports will continue until eligible people with disability start their plans with the NDIS.
If you are not currently receiving disability supports you can apply to access the NDIS from 1 July 2018 (except those in urgent or exceptional circumstances).

Answer. Self-management means you are responsible for paying the invoices related to the supports you have received through your NDIS plan.

Question. How do I access children’s program for my child in NDIS?
Answer. When planning for support for the participant include social interaction with peers as a goal.
Question. Will there be a limit on amount of funding throughout my child’s life?
Answer. The NDIS takes a flexible, whole-of-life approach to working with participants, their families and carers, to develop individualised plans. The NDIS provides participants with more choice and control over how, when and where their supports are provided.
It also provides certainty that they will receive the support they need over their lifetime.
Question. Does NDIS take over the FAHCSIA funding?
Answer. Existing Commonwealth and state-based services and supports will continue until eligible people with disability start their plans with the NDIS.
Question. Does someone contact us to organise an initial meeting? What are the next steps?
Answer. Once the NDIS has confirmed you meet the access requirements of the scheme, a planner will arrange to meet with you. Together, you will discuss your needs, goals and aspirations and the supports you currently receive. This may take more than one meeting and you can bring someone with you for support
Question. How is the money managed?
Answer. You have choice and the control over how you use funding for supports in your plan. That includes choice of how the supports are given and which service providers you use.
There are five ways that plans can be managed.
- Agency Managed –this is where the providers claim directly from the NDIA.
- Plan Manager –funding in your plan is allocated for a third party to manage the financial transactions in your plan.
- Self Managed –you (or your nominee) directly manage the funds; all transactions are completed by the participant for services rendered.
- Automated Payments (transport only) –these funds can be deposited into an NDIS bank account weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
- Combination –a combination of the above four options can be used together to meet your individual needs.
Question. What will be funded by NDIS?
Answer. The types of supports that the NDIS may fund for participants may include:
- daily personal activities
- transport to enable participation in community, social, economic and
- daily life activities
- workplace help to allow a participant to successfully get or keep employment in the open or supported labour market
- therapeutic supports including behaviour support
- help with household tasks to allow the participant to maintain their home environment
- help to a participant by skilled personnel in aids or equipment assessment, set up and training
- home modification design and installation
- mobility equipment, and
- vehicle modifications
Question. We are not with any organisation and we don’t get any service at the moment. Can we access NDIS?
Answer. You may meet the disability requirements if:
- you have an impairment or condition that is likely to be permanent (i.e.it is likely to be life long) and
- your impairment substantially reduces your ability to participate effectively in activities, or perform tasks or actions unless you have:
- assistance from other people or
- you have assistive technology or equipment (other than common items such as glasses) or
- you can’t participate effectively even with assistance or aids and equipment and
3. your impairment affects your capacity for social and economic participation and
4. you are likely to require support under the NDIS for your lifetime.
An impairment that varies in intensity e.g. because the impairment is of a chronic episodic nature may still be permanent, and you may require support under the NDIS for your lifetime, despite the variation.
